I would say that interest probably has waned in Canada due to several reasons.
1. No home driver, love him or hate him Jacques Villenuve had an impact on Canadian TV figures, just look at what Fernando Alonso, before he turned up, the Spanish GP (his home race) was very unpopular, motorcycle racing being more of a crowd pleaser, now there are 2 races in Spain, Circuit De Catalunya, which has to keep adding seats and Valencia, new for last year.
2. No track supported in F1 anymore. Due to the financial circumstances of the rescission, many of the popular tracks in the Northern hemisphere are giving way to Asian counties, where the recession hasn't hit as bad.
